Chichi travel clothes

I’ve been meaning to do a fashion post about our trip to Toronto. Believe it or not, I was able to live with approximately 20 articles of clothing on rotation. Our trip lasted over 10 weeks and touched three seasons – winter, spring and the beginning of summer – so I’m going to have to divide the stories into themes.

This is about cocktail party travel-dressing. While I was still in Manila packing for our family vacation in Canada (meaning, for total comfort & cold only), I had to make space for my Kohler business side trip. Imagine that I had to pack for a cold city like Chicago, the woods in Wisconsin, and casual laidback New Orleans. Plus I had to attend a convention, a few dinners and cocktail parties. How I kept my packing to just one suitcase is beyond me.

When travelling to a cold climate, bring clothes that perform multi-purpose especially if you’re on a business trip. These are my basic “chichi” travel clothes. *Chichi means fancy.

01 A dressy boot, both functional and stylish. Comfortable enough to wear for long walks and chic enough to wear to events indoors. These are my Celine boots. I will love and care for them forever. They are perfect in every way – the mid-calf height, the soft buttery leather, slightly Modish square toe and stacked heel.

02 Burberry London trench coat, just about as classic and iconic as you can get. This is an investment piece. It’ll never go out of style and will last forever. There are different fabrics, silhouettes, lengths and about fifty shades of camel for Burberry trench coats. Mine was mid-length and fitted. It hung perfectly just above the knee. It got me through Spring in the US and Canada.

03 My Joyce Makitalo Fantasmagorie cuff which can convert into a necklace pendant. Perfect multi-tasker.

04 I didn’t bring any leather pumps. I knew I wouldn’t wear them in Canada. So I brought one of my favourite Melissa shoes. Because, well… Melissa shoes are always fun and you won’t really care if they get scuffed because they’re basically just jelly shoes. These are called Electric. The one I have is in a soft pink velvet surface. The one pictured is mauve. I got mine at Geleia at Alabang Town Center.

At the home of Rachel Kohler in Chicago. I wore a black cotton knitted dress from Cos. It packs well and doesn’t need pressing. Those Celine bots. And for jewellery I wore my blue sapphire and diamond earrings which I designed plus the Makitalo cuff. My hair, I simply twisted it into a bun. Kept my makeup light and played up my eyes a bit. Comfortable. It was a very cold night. Freezing rain.

After Chicago we went to Wisconsin to attend the 140th anniversary of Kohler Co. Most of the guests were the same people at the Chicago party. Though it may appear that wore the same, it is different. This is also a knit cotton from Cos, but it’s got scalloped side slits and long sleeves. There’s that Joyce Makitalo piece, worn as a pendant. It is the perfect accessory for traveling. Wore the same red python clutch. In hindsight I should have brought 2 clutches but really, I didn’t have enough room in my suitcase.

A closer look at the shoes from the same outfit above. Sorry for the stupid selfie face. These are Melissa Electric in velvet pink. It was the closest thing to nude. Very comfortable. Now of course you would have to play it by ear whether the event or the industry is fashiony enough to welcome jelly shoes. I would stick to neutrals, just in case. Plus nude coloured shoes make you appear taller.

And there’s my ubiquitous Burberry trenchcoat + boots during the KBIS convention in New Orleans.

I felt inspired to pick out similar pieces from the internet. Basic things to pack when you have to go to chichi events.

01 Oscar de la Renta Teardrop Stone Earring. Always have one stand-out piece of jewellery. Mine was the double duty Makitalo cuff/pendant. This gorgeous pair of earrings from ODLR could also be your one fabulous piece.

02 Maison Martin Margiela Leather Pumps. Modern pumps from Maison Martin Margiela with a hidden platform and sculpted acrylic heel. Leather sole. Now 30% off

03 Black knit dress by Cos.

04 Loeffler Randall Matilde Low Wedge Boots. I couldn’t find a link to my actual Celine boots online. I got mine in Barney’s. These Loeffler Randalls look just as good minus the stacked heel and the mid-calf situation.

05 Kelly Wearstler Anja Statement Necklace. It’s about that one fabulous fashion accessory. I love this. Modern, sculptural, edgy.

06 Christopher Kon Ellena Woven Clutch. A pop of colour is always good if you’re doing an all black outfit. Can’t go wrong with a woven clutch like this.

Back to school food

Chicken fingers

This is for those whose kids have gone back to school. I need your help please.

Every year I struggle with my kids’ lunch. They are not of the age where they can be left alone to buy food at the cafeteria. (My eldest may be capable of handling money, but I’m not ready to trust her with daily lunch choice, haha. And she prefers to bring lunch from home.)

Aside from chicken fingers, like the photo above, I need easy, quick ideas to add to our menu. We do our chicken fingers and fish fillet from scratch because the packaged ones come with artificial flavours. There are a few extra steps but everyone is used to it. Sometimes we do adobo, cooked the night before. We also do fried egg with cheese. It’s just been the third day of school and I’m already running out of ideas. Help, please. And feel free to add snack ideas.

Please post in comment section. Thanks!!!
