Livin’ La Vida Imelda (theatre)

Last December I went on Carlos Celdran’s Imelda tour at the CCP and PICC. It was an unforgettable experience – fun, funny, thought-provoking, emotional, trippy, entertaining. I knew that he had taken this tour and made it into a theatre performance. He did a show in Toronto and invited my dad to see it. So when I found out that he was doing the show at Silverlens Gallery, I made sure I saw it here. It was a great show!

I was very curious to see how Carlos converted the tour into theatre. The tour was experiential. We were in the actual rooms and corridors of the CCP and the PICC. This was the room where Mrs Marcos had receptions after major performances.

The real tour included a jeepney ride from the CCP to the PICC with Carlos’ cassette player blasting VST&Co disco tunes.

Last Friday, my mom, dad and I went to see Carlos’ performance at Silverlens. The room was packed with people. I loved the set design.

The script was the same as the tour’s, as was his performance. Thought-provoking.

The experience was different. There were actors.

And dancing… if you wanted.

Even the hard-to-please journalist boss was extremely impressed. (Seriously, he never stays still for shows. He enjoyed it.)

The folks with “Imelda”

I love Silverlens’ space. I took a short course in photography here.

I asked Carlos for a souvenir poster. After all, I get “name-dropped”.

Like I said about the CCP tour, I wish every Filipino could see it. This show is the next best thing to the actual tour. And I say that only because I’m a fan of architecture; and the CCP and the PICC are my favourite structures here. Livin’ La Vida Imelda is for everyone – no matter what your politics is. You will come out of it with lots of questions… and hopefully, a deeper understanding of this country.
